How to Make a PowerPoint With ChatGPT (3 Ways)

A deck for Monday's sales review, a class presentation, a client pitch: ChatGPT can now build each of them as a real PowerPoint file. There are three ways to make a PowerPoint with ChatGPT, and they suit different starting points, so choosing first saves a round of fixing slides afterwards.

Quick answer. ChatGPT makes PowerPoint decks three ways: the ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in builds and edits slides inside PowerPoint, on every plan; ChatGPT Slides builds a deck inside ChatGPT on Pro, Business and Enterprise plans and exports .pptx; and a design connector such as Playyy lets ChatGPT produce a fully designed deck with images and export an editable PPTX.

Which ChatGPT PowerPoint route should you use?

Start from what you already have. An existing deck or company template points to the add-in, a team that wants to co-edit in ChatGPT points to Slides, and a deck that has to look designed, with product imagery and brand colors, points to a connector.

Plan details come from OpenAI's help center pages for ChatGPT for PowerPoint and Slides in ChatGPT. Slides began rolling out on October 16, 2026, so it may not show on every eligible account yet.

Way 1: Use the ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in

The add-in is the right choice when the deck already exists or has to follow a company template, because it works on the open file and keeps every slide editable.

  1. Install it. In PowerPoint, open Add-ins, find ChatGPT, and sign in with your ChatGPT account.
  2. Open the deck or template. Starting from your template keeps new slides in its layouts and fonts.
  3. Ask for slides or changes. "Draft a 6-slide section on Q3 results from this report," or select a slide and ask to tighten the text.
  4. Review before sending. Check the figures against your source, as OpenAI's own guidance advises for anything generated.

On Free and Go the add-in has limited usage, and on Plus, Pro and Business it draws on the plan's agentic usage limit, so a long editing session on a big deck can run into the cap.

Way 2: Make slides in ChatGPT Slides

ChatGPT Slides is OpenAI's collaborative presentation editor. Ask for a deck in ChatGPT and it creates an editable presentation you can change by hand, with text, images, shapes, tables and charts, while teammates edit and comment alongside you.

  1. Describe the deck. Purpose, audience, length and order: "A 10-slide launch plan for our sales team: goal, audience, timeline, channels, budget, risks."
  2. Attach your material. Notes, a report or a spreadsheet give ChatGPT real numbers to work with.
  3. Edit together. Click into any element to change it, or ask ChatGPT for deck-wide changes such as a new color scheme.
  4. Export. Download PowerPoint (.pptx), PDF or Google Slides from the export menu.

Slides is on Pro, Business and Enterprise plans as of October 2026. On Plus or Free, the add-in is the built-in route, and a regular chat can still return a basic .pptx file when you ask for one.

Way 3: Connect a design tool to ChatGPT (ChatGPT MCP)

The add-in and Slides both produce clean business layouts. When the deck needs to look designed, such as a pitch with product shots, a launch deck in brand colors or a sales deck with custom imagery, connect a design tool to ChatGPT. ChatGPT connects to outside tools through MCP, the open protocol behind custom connectors, and Playyy's connector gives it a design agent that builds editable slides, generates the images and applies your brand kit.

  1. Turn on developer mode. In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced settings and switch on Developer mode. On Business and Enterprise workspaces, an admin may need to allow custom connectors first.
  2. Add Playyy. Under Apps & Connectors, choose Create, name it Playyy, paste https://mcp.playyy.ai/mcp and set authentication to OAuth. Sign in to Playyy and approve the workspace. The Playyy setup guide for ChatGPT shows each screen.
  3. Ask for the deck. Open a new chat, enable Playyy from the + menu and write the brief: "Use Playyy to make an 8-slide launch deck for a cold-brew coffee brand, warm terracotta colors, product photo on every slide."
  4. Refine, then export PPTX. Ask for changes in the same chat or open the deck in Playyy and edit any element. Then ask ChatGPT to export it as PowerPoint.

OpenAI changes which plans can run custom connectors that create files, so check the developer mode note in your settings before planning a team rollout. A free Playyy account works, and each design uses Playyy credits. The same design agent also runs on its own in the AI presentation maker, if you'd rather start outside ChatGPT.

What to check before you send the .pptx

All three routes end in a PowerPoint file, and a two-slide test export tells you more than any feature list. A .pptx file is a package of XML parts defined by the Office Open XML standard. Editable text, shapes and native charts are separate parts PowerPoint can reopen; a chart saved as a picture is a single image with no data behind it.

Open the test file in PowerPoint and click a chart, a heading and an image. If the chart opens its data sheet, the numbers can be updated later; if it selects as a picture, rebuild it before the deck goes to anyone who will keep editing. Fonts are the other common surprise, so check the slides on the computer that will present them.

Prompts that get better ChatGPT PowerPoint decks

  • Name the audience and the decision. "For our CFO, who has to approve the budget" changes every slide.
  • Give the slide count and the order. "Eight slides: problem, solution, market, traction, team, ask."
  • Paste the numbers. ChatGPT builds better charts from figures you supply than from figures it has to guess.
  • Keep one idea per slide. Text stays readable from the back of the room, a habit covered in our guide to what makes a slide deck work.
  • Say what must not change. When editing, name the slides to leave alone.

ChatGPT now makes PowerPoint decks wherever you work: inside PowerPoint with the add-in, in ChatGPT Slides on higher plans, or through a design connector when the slides need to look designed. If you also use Claude, the same three routes exist there, compared in how to make a PowerPoint with Claude. To try the connector route, connect Playyy to your AI assistant and ask for your next deck in ChatGPT.
