remove.bg Is Shutting Down: 7 Best Alternatives

remove.bg made one-click background removal the default for a whole generation of sellers, designers and developers. On December 1, 2026 the standalone service ends: the website, accounts and the self-serve API are switched off, the plugins built on that API stop working with it, and the technology continues inside Canva. If you still upload product shots, pay for credits or call the API from a script, there are a few decisions to make before that date.

The short answer. remove.bg is shutting down its standalone site and self-serve API on December 1, 2026 at 9:00 CET. Background removal moves into Canva, where it is a paid-plan feature, and the API moves to Leonardo.Ai. The best remove.bg alternatives are Playyy for product and brand visuals, Adobe Express for free single images, Photoroom for e-commerce batches with an API, and rembg for self-hosted pipelines.

Free plans and prices as of October 2026; they change often.

1. Playyy — Best for product and brand visuals

Best for: sellers, creators and small marketing teams who remove backgrounds to make listings, ads and social posts, not just transparent PNGs.

Playyy removes the background in one click and keeps the cutout on an editable canvas, which is where most remove.bg workflows used to continue in a second app. From there you can put the product on a pure-white background for a marketplace main image with the white background tool, generate a lifestyle scene behind it with GPT Image 2.5, erase stray objects, expand the frame to a new aspect ratio or upscale the result.

For catalogs, the batch photo editor applies the same cleanup to a folder of shots, which covers what many people used remove.bg's desktop app for. The brand kit is the part a cutout tool never had: paste your website URL and Playyy extracts your brand colors, fonts, voice and logo, then drafts on-brand designs around the product. There are also 1,000+ templates for listings, ads and social formats.

Pricing: free plan with daily bonus credits. Basic is $18 a month ($15 billed annually), Pro $48 ($39 annually) and Mega $98 ($79 annually). As of October 2026, the first month of a monthly plan is half price: $9, $24 or $49.

Watch out for: Playyy has no drop-in replacement for the remove.bg API endpoint, so it suits people who worked in the web app rather than in scripts.

2. Canva — The official remove.bg successor

Best for: people who already design in Canva and removed backgrounds to drop images into Canva layouts.

This is where remove.bg's technology now lives, so cutout quality is familiar. Select an image in a Canva design, choose Edit and run Background Remover; the result stays editable inside the design, and you can restore or erase areas with a brush. The difference from remove.bg is access: Canva includes Background Remover only with paid plans, so a free Canva account is not a real free remove.bg replacement.

Watch out for: there is no standalone "upload, cut out, download" flow without a Canva account, and the developer API is not part of Canva; it moved to Leonardo.Ai.

3. Adobe Express — Best free option for single images

Best for: occasional single images when you want a free result without installing anything.

Adobe Express offers background removal as a quick action in the browser and in its mobile apps: upload a photo, and it returns a transparent PNG you can download or keep editing in an Express design. Adobe offers it free with an Adobe account. It handles people and products well, and the result can go straight into an Express template.

Watch out for: the quick action handles one image at a time and there is no API, and Adobe treats background removal as part of the Express product, so the free terms can change.

4. Photoroom — Best for e-commerce batches and an API

Best for: online sellers who process dozens of product photos at a time and developers who need a commercial background removal API.

Photoroom is the closest like-for-like replacement for remove.bg's paid use cases. It runs on web and mobile, has batch mode for processing many product photos with the same background and shadow settings, and offers a background removal API with its own documentation and pricing. Its free plan is capped at 100 exports a month and is for personal, non-commercial use; paid plans raise the export limit and allow commercial use.

Watch out for: compare its API pricing with your remove.bg volume before migrating; Photoroom prices by usage tier rather than remove.bg's credit packs. Our Photoroom alternatives roundup covers its limits in more detail.

5. Pixelcut — Best mobile app for sellers

Best for: sellers who shoot and list products from a phone.

Pixelcut removes backgrounds in its iOS and Android apps and on the web, and free exports carry no watermark. The AI tools are limited on the free plan, and batch editing is part of Pixelcut Pro. It is quick for a few listings a day, less so for a large catalog. We cover its free limits in is Pixelcut free.

Watch out for: the free plan's daily AI limits run out quickly when you process a full product shoot.

6. Leonardo.Ai — The official path for remove.bg API users

Best for: developers and teams that called the remove.bg API from code and want the least disruptive migration.

Leonardo.Ai is part of Canva and is the official new home of remove.bg's API. The pitch is one account and one set of credits for background removal alongside Leonardo's image and video generation. Teams with enterprise API contracts keep their terms; self-serve users need to sign up for Leonardo and update their integration before December 1.

Watch out for: budget for the migration work itself: new authentication, new endpoints and new credit accounting, even if the cutout model behind it is the same.

7. rembg — Best free, self-hosted option

Best for: developers who want no per-image cost, no external dependency and images that never leave their own server.

rembg is an open-source background removal library and command-line tool. It runs locally or on your own server, ships with several segmentation models, and can be run as an HTTP server, which makes it a practical stand-in for the remove.bg API in internal pipelines. It costs nothing per image, though you pay in compute and maintenance.

Watch out for: edge quality on hair and semi-transparent objects depends on the model you pick, and someone technical has to install, host and maintain it.

What changes on December 1, 2026

Here is what changes, per remove.bg's official FAQ and Leonardo.Ai's announcement remove.bg API is moving to Leonardo.Ai:

WhatWhat happens
remove.bg website and accountsNo longer available from December 1, 2026, 9:00 CET
Background removal for designsContinues inside Canva (Canva has owned remove.bg since 2021)
Self-serve APIStops accepting requests on December 1; API access moves to Leonardo.Ai
Enterprise API contractsContinue as agreed
Photoshop plugin, desktop app, other integrationsDiscontinued on December 1, 2026
Annual subscriptionsRun until the cutoff; unused time refunded pro rata automatically
Monthly subscriptionsEnd at the cutoff; a final renewal on or after November 1 is free
Pay-as-you-go creditsExpire on December 1, 2026

The remove.bg technology is not disappearing, it is changing address. Canva is the official path for people who remove backgrounds inside designs, and Leonardo.Ai is the official path for developers. Everyone else, and especially anyone who used remove.bg without a Canva subscription, needs a new tool.

What to do before December 1

  • Spend or export what you paid for. Unused pay-as-you-go credits expire on the cutoff, so process any backlog of product photos now and download the results.
  • Export your records. remove.bg asks users to download their credit usage report and invoices from the Account page before the cutoff; they can't be downloaded afterward.
  • Find every script that calls the API. Search your code and automation tools (Zapier, Make, Shopify apps) for api.remove.bg. Each one needs a new endpoint before December 1, when the self-serve API stops accepting requests.
  • Replace the Photoshop plugin and desktop app. Both are discontinued on December 1, so batch actions and folder watchers built on them stop working.
  • Pick a replacement per job, not one tool for everything: single images, product catalogs and API pipelines have different best answers, as the comparison above shows.

Which remove.bg alternative should you use?

Start from how you used remove.bg, because the right replacement differs for each job:

  • You uploaded single images on the website. Adobe Express is the simplest free swap. If the cutout then goes into a listing, ad or social post, Playyy saves the second step by keeping it on a canvas.
  • You processed product catalogs. Photoroom or Playyy's batch photo editor; both handle a folder of shots with consistent results. Playyy adds white backgrounds, generated scenes and brand-kit designs; Photoroom adds an API.
  • You designed in Canva anyway. Use Canva's Background Remover with Canva Pro; remove.bg says it uses the same background-removal technology.
  • You called the API from code. Migrate to Leonardo.Ai if you want the official path, Photoroom if you want a dedicated commercial API, or rembg if you can host the model yourself.

Why do cutout results differ between tools? Background removal is a segmentation problem: a model predicts, pixel by pixel, how likely each point belongs to the subject, and the hard part is the alpha edge around hair, fur, glass and motion blur. Tools trained mostly on product photos tend to produce cleaner straight edges, while portrait-trained models handle hair better. That is why it pays to run your own five hardest images through two or three of these tools before committing a whole catalog. Our guide on getting clean edges with an AI background remover walks through what to check.

The bottom line

remove.bg is not vanishing, it is being folded into Canva for designers and Leonardo.Ai for developers. If you don't pay for Canva Pro and don't want to rebuild an API integration, you need a new tool before December 1, 2026. For product and brand work, try Playyy's free background remover: cut out the product, put it on white or in a generated scene, and turn it into an on-brand listing or ad without leaving the canvas.
