Twitch Emote Size

A Twitch emote must be supplied at three sizes: 112 × 112 px, 56 × 56 px, and 28 × 28 px. Twitch does not generate the smaller versions for you — each is uploaded separately and each must be under 1 MB with a transparent background. The 28 × 28 px version is the one that appears inline in chat, and it is the size the whole design has to be built around.

Design Tips

  • Design at 112 × 112 px, then check it at 28 × 28 px before going further. If the idea is not readable at 28 px, no amount of detail at 112 px will save it — this is the single most common emote rejection reason.
  • Use a transparent PNG background. Twitch chat runs in both light and dark themes, and a baked-in background colour looks wrong in one of them.
  • Add a subtle outline or contrasting rim. Emotes sit directly on chat backgrounds of varying colour, and an unoutlined dark emote disappears against dark mode.
  • Exaggerate one feature rather than reproducing a full character. Emotes read as silhouettes at chat size, and a single strong expression beats an accurate small portrait.

How to Make a Twitch Emote in Playyy

An emote is three files, not one. Make it once at 112 × 112 px, then export all three sizes — Twitch won't accept the upload if any of them is missing.

  1. 1

    Open Playyy

Playyy runs in your browser, so there's nothing to download. Sign in and you'll land on the Home page.

  2. 2

Type your prompt and set the size to 112 × 112 px

Describe the expression you want in the input box, then either pick the square format from the size options underneath or say it in the prompt — "a Twitch emote at 112 × 112 px" works fine. Ask for one exaggerated feature rather than a detailed character: emotes read as silhouettes in chat, and anything fussy at 112 px disappears at 28 px.

  3. 3

Create your emote and export all three sizes

Generate it on a transparent background so it works in both light and dark chat themes, and add a contrasting rim so it doesn't vanish against dark mode. Then export at 112 × 112 px, 56 × 56 px, and 28 × 28 px — Twitch doesn't make the smaller ones for you, and each needs to be under 1 MB.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Twitch emote size?+

Three sizes are required: 112 × 112 px, 56 × 56 px, and 28 × 28 px. Each is uploaded separately, each must be under 1 MB, and PNG with transparency is required. Animated emotes use GIF at the same three sizes.

Why does Twitch require three emote sizes?+

Twitch serves different sizes in different contexts — 28 px inline in chat, 56 px in the emote picker, and 112 px in tooltips and previews. It does not downscale automatically, so supplying only the largest results in a rejected upload.

What size are Twitch sub badges?+

Sub badges are a different asset: 72 × 72 px, 36 × 36 px, and 18 × 18 px, also uploaded as three separate transparent PNGs. They are smaller than emotes and appear beside usernames rather than inline in messages.

How many emote slots does a Twitch channel get?+

It depends on affiliate or partner status and subscriber count — affiliates start with one tier-1 slot and unlock more as subscriptions grow. Every slot needs the same three uploads at 112 × 112, 56 × 56, and 28 × 28 px.

Can Twitch emotes be animated?+

Yes, for Affiliates and Partners, uploaded as GIF at the same three sizes. Animated emotes must be under 1 MB each and are limited to 60 frames — a long animation has to be cut down rather than compressed.
