A flat lay tells a shopper the colour and the print. It doesn't tell them how the shoulders sit, whether the collar stands or folds, how much volume is in a sleeve, or what the garment looks like when something is inside it. Ghost mannequin photography answers all of that without putting a person in the frame: the piece appears to be worn by an invisible body, holding its own three-dimensional shape, with the inside of the collar visible through the neck opening. It is the difference between a photo of fabric and a photo of a finished garment.

Quick answer. Ghost mannequin photography is an apparel image format that shows a garment in three dimensions with no visible body, hanger, or stand — as though worn by an invisible person. Its purpose is to communicate cut, drape, and construction at the same time, which a flat lay cannot do and an on-model shot does only partially, because a model's face and pose compete for attention.

What Ghost Mannequin Photography Is

The format has more names than it needs, and they all describe the same thing: invisible mannequin photography, the hollow man effect, and — after the retouching step that used to create it — neck joint editing. A photo is a ghost mannequin shot when two conditions hold. The garment occupies volume as if a body were inside it, and the interior that a body would hide is visible: the inside back of the collar through the neck opening, the lining at a cuff, the inside of a waistband.

That second condition is what separates the format from a plain cutout. A garment photographed flat and lifted off its background is still flat — it just has no background. The ghost mannequin version contains information that no single photograph of a flat garment ever held.

Physical ghost mannequins exist too, and the shared name causes confusion. A physical one is a segmented dress form with removable panels, used so a photographer can shoot the garment on the form and then shoot the hidden section separately. The digital ghost mannequin is the finished image. One is equipment; the other is the deliverable.

What Makes It Look Three-Dimensional

The effect is usually described as "removing the mannequin," which gets the mechanism backwards. Removal is the easy half. What produces the dimensional look is everything that has to be added where the support used to be — and these four details are also what a reviewer checks:

A collar that stands. On a flat lay the collar lies down and reads as two layers of fabric. Here it stands away from the body line, with the inside back visible through the neck opening. That single detail is what most people are reacting to when they say an image looks three-dimensional.

Shoulders holding a line. A garment on a body has a defined shoulder slope and a slight roll at the seam. Flat, the shoulder is a fold. Keeping the slope is also what makes fit legible, because a shopper reads size from shoulder geometry before anything else.

Volume in the sleeves and body. Not inflated, just occupied: sleeves that taper naturally, a hem that hangs rather than splays, and enough interior shadow to tell the eye there is space inside the fabric.

Interior shadow that agrees with the light. Inside the neck and cuff openings it should be darker, and darker on the side the light isn't coming from. Get this wrong and the garment reads as a paper cutout of a garment — technically hollow, visually flat.

How to Create a Ghost Mannequin Photo With AI

The definition above is also the spec for the output: volume as if a body were inside, and a visible interior. Here is the sequence that produces it from one photo, in under a minute per garment once the source is decent.

  4. Fix the one thing that's wrong. A stray thread, a security tag, a fold that reads as a dent. Handle it in the same session rather than exporting and reopening elsewhere.
  5. Export for the destination. Pure white for marketplace slots; studio grey or a brand background for your own collection grid.

Steps 2 and 3 are where tools in this category separate. Anything that only strips the background hands back a flat silhouette — which fails the second half of the definition, because a cutout has no interior. The hollow-body look depends on generating geometry that was never photographed, and the review step exists because that geometry is inferred rather than observed.

What It Replaced: the Two-Exposure Composite

Before reconstruction was automatic, the format was built by hand. The garment went on a segmented dress form; the photographer shot the front, then removed the neck panel — or laid the collar area flat — and took a second exposure. A retoucher masked the neck opening from the first frame and dropped the interior in from the second, so the inside of the collar showed through the hole where a body would be. Two exposures, one mask, per garment. That composite is why the format is also called neck joint editing.

It works, and it carries two costs. What AI changes is the input requirement, not the output standard. There is no second exposure, because the hidden interior is generated from the geometry visible in the single photo you already own.

Where the Format Belongs — and Where Amazon Says No

This is the part most explanations get backwards. Ghost mannequin photography is routinely called "the Amazon apparel standard," and for adult clothing that is not what Amazon's own style guide says.

Amazon's Selling Partner Style Guide for Clothing & Accessories specifies on-figure crops for adult apparel MAIN images — full length for dresses and suits, upper body for tops and outerwear, waist down for trousers and jeans — with models standing and wearing shoes on the MAIN shot. Off-figure lay-down MAIN images are the specified format for Kids & Baby items, accessories such as scarves, belts, hats and ties, and multipacks. The guide warns that MAIN images failing its requirements "may result in your ASIN being deprioritized in, or suppressed from search."

So the honest placement map:

  • Amazon adult apparel MAIN slot: on-figure. A hollow garment doesn't satisfy it, which is where AI on-model photography from the same garment photo earns its keep.
  • Amazon alternate slots (up to eight per SKU): ghost mannequin is welcome, and it's the cleanest way to show cut, lining, and back construction.
  • Amazon Kids & Baby, accessories, multipacks: off-figure lay-down is the specified MAIN format.
  • Your own Shopify or Etsy storefront: the invisible mannequin shot is a legitimate MAIN image, and it's what makes a collection grid read as one set, because no face or pose competes with the garment.

Sellers who treat every channel as if it had Amazon's adult-apparel rule pay for on-model shots they don't need. Sellers who assume the format is universally accepted get their best listings quietly deprioritized. Both mistakes come from the same missing paragraph.

Which Garments It Works On

Across a few hundred apparel conversions, the pattern is consistent enough to call before you start.

Works cleanly: structured pieces on a hanger — blazers, denim jackets, button-downs — flat lays squared to the camera, dress-form shots where the form is fully visible, and on-model photos where the garment isn't cropped by the frame edge.

Needs a second pass: heavy knitwear, where a reconstructed collar can read thicker than the real rib; sheer fabric, where the interior has to show what's behind it; and unusual closures such as asymmetric zips, wrap fronts, and layered plackets.

Doesn't work: garments folded in half, photos where a hand or clip holds fabric in place, and angles steep enough to hide one shoulder. There's nothing to infer the missing shoulder from, so it gets invented.

The rule underneath all three: the more of the garment's silhouette is visible in the source, the less has to be guessed. A chaotic background costs you edge quality, so a background removal pass on the product photo first gives the reconstruction a cleaner edge to follow.

Export Settings That Keep the Hollow-Body Look Intact

A good reconstruction can still fail at upload if the export is wrong.

Amazon's apparel guide requires MAIN images at least 1,000 pixels and no larger than 3,900 pixels on the longest side to enable zoom, on a pure white background (RGB 255, hex #FFFFFF), at a minimum 72 dpi, with JPG preferred.

Practical settings for a ghost mannequin set: 2000 px on the longest side for marketplace slots, 2048 px square for your own storefront grid, JPEG quality 90, and pure white fill rather than transparency. Transparent PNGs are useful as working files and a liability as uploads, because the alpha channel renders inconsistently and marketplace validators reject the result.

Keeping It Consistent Across a Drop

One garment is a task. A collection is the actual job, and consistency is what makes the grid read as photography rather than as a folder of files.

Lock three decisions before processing the set: the background (pure white or one studio grey, not both), the crop ratio (Amazon's apparel guide recommends 10:13 and warns against mixing square and rectangular crops within a listing), and the camera height, so every collar sits at the same point in the frame. Then run colorways together instead of one at a time — the same shirt in five colours should share one silhouette.

The tell of an inconsistent set is subtle and shoppers feel it anyway: hems at different heights, one sleeve holding more volume than the rest, three shades of white background in a six-image grid.

Where It Sits in a Listing Set

Ghost mannequin photography proves construction. It doesn't prove scale, fit on a body, or how a piece looks in daylight — which is why Amazon recommends a minimum of five images per listing and permits up to eight alternates. The hollow-body frame covers construction, an on-model frame covers fit, and a staged frame covers context.

Start with the photo already sitting in the supplier folder, generate the hollow-body pass, and check the collar. The frames that come after it don't need a set either — the lifestyle and in-use shots are staged around the same garment photo.
