Can You Use PNG Images for eBay Listings?

Every seller runs into this the first time a product shot comes out of a design tool as a PNG: can I use PNG as images for listings on eBay, or does the file have to be a JPG? The answer is yes — and the reason sellers still get burned is that "accepted format" and "accepted image" are two different tests. Each marketplace publishes its own format whitelist, its own pixel floor and its own file-size ceiling, and two of the four big ones handle transparency in a way that will quietly wreck a main image. Etsy rules transparent PNG out entirely, and Amazon accepts the format while rejecting what transparency does to a main image — two different failures that look identical until the listing goes live.

Direct answer. Yes. eBay's official help page lists JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, WEBP, HEIC and AVIF as accepted picture formats, capped at 12MB per file. The limitation is not the format — it's transparency. A transparent PNG gets flattened when the listing renders, so export product shots onto a solid white background instead.

eBay Image Format Rules: What PNG Actually Does in a Listing

So, can I use PNG as images for listings on eBay? Yes, and eBay is explicit about it. eBay's picture rules are among the most permissive in ecommerce, which is why the format question has a boring answer and the transparency question has an interesting one.

eBay's official help page for adding pictures to your listings lists JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, WEBP, HEIC and AVIF as accepted upload formats, caps each file at 12MB, and recommends images around 1600 x 1600 pixels against a 500 x 500 minimum. PNG is a fully valid eBay image format, not a workaround.

The same page sets three other constraints worth memorising. You can add up to 24 pictures per listing. A 1:1 or 16:9 aspect ratio displays best across listings, search results and other placements. And graphics such as badges, logos, copyright notices or watermarks are prohibited because, in eBay's own words, they "can affect your listing's placement in search results" — a ranking consequence, not just a cosmetic one.

Where transparent PNG eBay uploads go wrong is downstream. eBay generates its own resized derivatives of every photo for search tiles, gallery strips and mobile cards. Alpha channels do not survive that pipeline intact, and the flattening happens without asking you what colour to flatten onto.

Amazon Image Requirements: PNG Is Accepted, Transparency Is Not

Amazon image requirements are stricter and split across two layers: a technical layer about the file, and a content layer about the picture. PNG clears the first and often fails the second.

On the technical side, Amazon's Listings Lounge post on product image requirements states that all images must be 500 to 10,000 pixels on their longest side and provided in JPEG (.jpg or .jpeg), TIFF (.tif), PNG (.png) or non-animated GIF (.gif). It also notes that Amazon prefers images larger than 1,000 pixels on the longest side so the zoom viewer activates, prefers JPEG as the format, and recommends at least six images plus one video per product.

The content layer is where transparent files die. Amazon's 2026 product photography standards update specifies a minimum of 1000 pixels on the longest side for zoom with 1600+ described as optimal, at least 72 dpi, a pure white background of RGB 255, 255, 255 for main images, and a product that fills 85–100% of the frame. A transparent PNG has no background pixels at all, so it cannot satisfy a rule that asks for a specific white value. Uploading one puts you at the mercy of whatever Amazon's converter decides to composite onto.

Amazon Product Image Size and Photo Dimensions, Spec by Spec

Amazon product image size is the spec sellers get wrong most often, usually because they think in width-by-height when Amazon thinks in longest-side.

Amazon photo dimensions are expressed as a range on the longest side — 500 pixels at the bottom, 10,000 at the top — with two soft thresholds inside it. Cross 1,000 pixels and zoom becomes available. Reach 1600 and you're in the range Amazon calls optimal. A square 2000 x 2000 export satisfies all of it simultaneously, which is why it's the default we hand to sellers: one file size that clears Amazon product image size rules, eBay's 1600 x 1600 recommendation and Etsy's 2000-pixel guidance without a second export.

The rule that trips people up is aspect ratio. Amazon photo dimensions say nothing about it, and Amazon doesn't require square — but non-square main images get letterboxed with white bars, which then reads as a smaller product in a search grid full of competitors who filled the frame. Shopify and Etsy: Where PNG Wins and Where It Breaks

These two platforms are the clearest illustration of why there's no single right image file format for ecommerce — the same PNG is the recommended choice on one and explicitly unsupported on the other.

Shopify is the PNG-friendly end of the spectrum. Its product media types documentation names PNG as the best file type for product images, followed by JPEG, with PSD, TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP also accepted. Files must be under 20 MB and up to 5000 x 5000 px or 25 megapixels, and Shopify notes that square product images "usually display best" at 2048 x 2048 px. Because you control the storefront theme, transparency is genuinely useful here — a cutout can sit on a coloured section background instead of a white box.

Etsy is the opposite. Etsy's requirements and best practices for images page states that shop images should be .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg or .heic, and that animated .gif files and transparent .png files are not supported. Etsy also recommends roughly 2000 pixels on the shortest side at 72 PPI and keeping files under 1MB so uploads complete on slow connections. On Etsy, transparency isn't a rendering risk — it's an explicit exclusion.

Why Transparent PNGs Turn Black (the Mechanism Nobody Explains)

Here's the technical reason a transparent cutout can come back looking broken, which most marketplace image specs articles skip entirely.

A PNG stores four channels: red, green, blue and alpha. Alpha says how opaque each pixel is. JPEG stores three channels and has no concept of alpha at all. When a marketplace converts your upload into JPEG derivatives for thumbnails and search tiles, the alpha channel is discarded — and fully transparent pixels typically carry RGB values of 0, 0, 0 underneath. Drop the alpha without explicitly compositing onto a matte colour and those pixels resolve to black.

In our testing across seller accounts, that's exactly the failure pattern behind every transparent PNG eBay complaint we've had to debug: a cutout that previews perfectly in the upload dialog and then shows a dark halo or a solid dark box in the live listing grid. It's not a bug in your file. It's a pipeline that had no instruction about what "behind the product" should look like. The fix is to make the decision yourself before upload — flatten the cutout onto white so there is no alpha channel left to discard. Playyy's background remover exports a white-filled version alongside the transparent one for exactly this reason.

PNG vs JPG for Listings: A 10-Second Decision Rule

The PNG vs JPG for listings debate gets treated as a quality argument. For marketplaces it's really a workflow decision, and it collapses into three cases.

Keep the transparent PNG as your master file. It's lossless, it re-edits cleanly, and it's the version you'll want when you build ads, banners or a Shopify storefront section later. Then export a white background JPG for every marketplace upload — eBay, Amazon and Etsy all accept it, none of them can misinterpret it, and at 2000 x 2000 with quality 85 it typically lands between 200KB and 500KB, comfortably inside Etsy's 1MB guidance. Use PNG as the upload format only where a JPEG would visibly degrade the image: flat-colour graphics, size charts, packaging text, screenshots.

When we processed a batch of roughly 60 cutouts for a homeware seller, going straight to white-background JPEGs cut the number of images rejected or re-uploaded to zero, and it removed the step where someone has to eyeball each listing after publishing. If your cutouts still need cleaning up before that export, our walkthrough on how to remove background from product photos covers the edge cases — hair, glass, reflective metal — that automated tools handle poorly.

One export at 2000 x 2000 on white satisfies every row of that table — it clears the Amazon photo dimensions range, eBay's 1600 x 1600 recommendation and Etsy's shortest-side guidance in a single file. That's the practical takeaway: picking an image file format for ecommerce isn't a per-platform decision, it's one compliant export plus a lossless master.

The Short Version

Yes, PNG works on eBay — and on Amazon and Etsy too, as a format. The thing that gets listings suppressed isn't the file extension, it's transparency meeting a conversion pipeline that has no instructions. Amazon image requirements are the tightest of the four platforms here — a pure white main image, and Amazon photo dimensions between 500 and 10,000 pixels on the longest side — so an export that satisfies Amazon satisfies everyone else by default. Save your master as PNG, publish a white background JPG at 2000 x 2000, and reserve PNG uploads for graphics with hard edges. If your current archive is a mix of formats and sizes, Playyy's image converter will batch them into one consistent marketplace-ready export.
